About starting the application

 I am new to UC Mexico Initiative. How do I add my profile information to this application?
 I see the words 'Collection Loading' but nothing seems to be happening. What's the problem?

I am new to the UC Mexico Initiative. Do you have step by step instructions for adding my profile information to this application?

I see the words 'Collection Loading' but nothing seems to be happening. What's the problem?

When you first get to the application, it will take a little time to open. Be patient. It will be faster the next time.

The application wants me to install the Microsoft Silverlight plugin. Why?

This application is based on Silverlight Pivot, which optimizes navigating, searching and visualizing information linked to images. More information about Silverlight can be found at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/silverlight/. Installation instructions can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight/Get-Started/Install/Default.aspx. It is important that you the latest version of the plugin.

Shall I disable popup blocker for this application to work?

Yes. This version of the application requires that popup blocking is disabled.

I work on a Mac. Which browsers shall I use?

Safari and Firefox are supported on the Mac, but Chrome is not. A list of supported platforms and browsers is at http://www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight/Get-Started/Install/Default.aspx. Please make sure that you use the latest available browser and plugin versions. A step-by-step installation guide is at http://www.learn360.com/silverlight-plugin-install-mac.aspx.

I use Firefox, and have hard time installing Silverlight plugin. What shall I do?

Make sure you have the latest versions of the browser and of the plugin. You may need to check whether the plugin is enabled in Firefox, and/or reset the browser. I forgot my username or password. What shall I do?

If you forgot your password you can reset it from the login page, by clicking "Recover password", entering your username, and then following directions in the email sent to your address. If you forgot your username, please create a new account (using the same email address as before, to match the email already in your profile.)

How do I navigate the image gallery?

Use the mouse to pan and zoom in the gallery view, like navigating on Google Earth or Google Maps. Use the mouse scroll wheel or slider bar in the right upper corner to change zoom level. You can display cards in a grid or graph view using icons next to the upper right corner slider. You can also subset displayed cards in several ways. Type a search word/phrase in the search box at the upper left or use categories or selections in the left search panel to find people based on their primary and secondary areas of expertise, affiliations, etc.

How do I find people with specific expertise?

Here is an example. If you want to find hydrologists who also do modeling or visualization: (1) click on Primary Domain to expand it showing the selections, check the Hydrology box, (2) click on the Secondary Domain to show the list and check Visualization and Modeling. That pulls up the gallery of people who consider themselves hydrologists and do modeling or visualization. You can also type ďhydroĒ in the search box, to see all entries related to Hydrology. This will include anyone picking hydrology as a primary or secondary domain as well as people with organizational affiliations that have hydrology in the name or hydrology in their research interests. You can then select modeling, visualization in the primary and secondary domain categories to subset this larger group to get to your target group.

About editing member profiles

My profile is incomplete or needs to be changed. How do I do that?

Bring up your card and double click your picture. A pop-up will appear with all of the information in your profile. If this is your first time, you need to create an account (login and password) to edit your information. Be sure that your email address matches the email that we have for you. Once you have created an account with a log in and password, you will be able to edit your information. To make changes, click the 'Edit Profile' button on the pop-up with all of your information in it and click the Save Button. Clicking on Close will take you back to your gallery picture. The application is updated on a regular basis (nightly or bi-weekely) so it may take a few days before the updated information appears on the cards. During the launch of the application we will update information nightly.

When I try to double click on my card in a gallery, the card gets bigger and smaller and moves around and I canít get it to get into profile edit mode. What do I do?

If you pull up your card by your name so it is the only one on the page, you should have no problem double clicking on it and entering the edit profile pop-up. If you want to access your card from a gallery, click on your card and then use the mouse scroll wheel to expand the view so your card nearly fills the screen and double click. This will open your card.

When I double-click on my card nothing happens. Why?

I donít seem to have a card. What do I do?

Search for yourself by typing your name into the search box. If it does not appear, you need to contact Veronique Rorive to be added. A profile card will be generated overnight and you'll be able to edit your profile the next day.

I want to add a photo, or the one in there is low resolution. How do I replace it with a different image?

In the profile edit page, while editing, under your current picture is a link to update the image. You can upload the file from your computer, or provide a URL to the image hosted on another server.

I updated my profile, but the information on the card hasnít changed. Why?

When you update the profile and reload the gallery, information in the information panel on the right side of the gallery is updated right away. Profile cards are regenerated at regular cycles (every couple days, or more frequently depending on demand). If you donít see your updated information on your card in a day or two, or find any other discrepancy, please email us at veronique.rorive@ucr.edu.

I updated my profile, but my keywords are slightly different now. Why?

Administrators will try to adjusted spelling and unify references to organizations, domains, keywords,and specialty groups, to make searches more productive and easier. Changes will be kept to a minimum, but please email us (veronique.rorive@ucr.edu) if you disagree with them.

I have some ideas about how this application can be improved, and/or have additional places where a platform like this would be useful. Who do I contact?

Please email veronique.rorive@ucr.edu. We can show you examples of this platform/utility as it applies to biodiversity studies, the analysis and visualization of soil samples, of survey data, neuroscience imagery, geoscience model catalogs, etc. It will be also used to allow searching of the EarthCube community inventory of cyberinfrastructure resources (to be released soon)

What platforms and browsers are supported?

The application runs on Windows (Internet Explorer, FireFox, Chrome) and Mac (FireFox and Safari). See supported platforms and browsers at http://www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight/Get-Started/Install/Default.aspx. We are planning an HTML5 implementation in the future, to support additional platforms.

My card is not updated, or I experience other problems.
